Week#4 - Island Survival 10/16/2011
The show used for this lesson was Lost S01E01. There is also an episode from Man vs Wild called Castaway S04E04 where Bear Grylls demonstrates how to survive on a deserted island. As usual, I start with a short introduction to the show and show them 2 famous Korean actors who are part of the show's cast.
For the activity, I divide the class into 3 teams.
I tell the class that they have been stranded on a subtropical deserted island and that they can choose 7 items that they will have with them on the island from the sheet of paper that I hand them. I have printed out a sheet with names and pictures of 24 items to choose from. I also give them a sheet of paper where they're supposed to write the 7 items on.
While they are discussing with their team, I write 5 categories on the board: water, food, shelter, warmth and health. Each team now enumerates their chosen items and they get corresponding points for each item. (compass is worth 2 escape points, first aid kit is worth 2 health points etc)
I now hand them another 2 sheets of paper with pictures with 12 strategies they can choose from (build a tent, find food, etc). Each strategy will also let them earn corresponding points, but for each strategy undertaken, we will subtract one point for food and one point for water in each round
To escape, the team needs at least 10 escape points. However, they cannot simply choose and escape strategy all the time. They must maintain adequate resources for each of the five resource categories AT ALL TIMES. Therefore, if a team finds itself close to zero points in any resource category, they should immediately adopt a strategy that will increase their resources in that category.
